US Labor Department Summit Sets Stage for Disability Employment.
In addition to workshops, Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy Neil Romano and decorated disabled veteran and entrepreneur Dawn Halfaker made presentations. Halfaker discussed her transition from the combat zone to civilian life and described her experiences as the chief executive officer of Halfaker and Associates, a small business.
Tomorrow”s featured events are stakeholder meetings, where employers, government agencies, university officials and interest groups will discuss how to expand access to the talent pool of workers with disabilities.
‘People with disabilities are a great, largely untapped resource for our nation,’ said Romano. ‘This summit brings together the national leaders of business, academia, the government and interest groups to continue progress toward people being hired and promoted based upon their abilities, not their disabilities.’

STUDENT OF MERIT: Nathan Hochstetler sees future in helping others.
He also became an entrepreneur, running his own car-detailing business for four years. These days, he earns money running an eBay store, usually selling exercise equipment he buys at garage sales and refurbishes. When Nathan saw a need at the night-school English class, he learned how to write a grant application, which brought the program $2,000.The night school also inspired Nathan to learn about different cultures, and he began studying Latin American literature. He also was a foreign exchange student in Madrid, Spain, in 2006 and Scotland last year.In another life-changing school experience, Nathan said he enrolled in an elective class to work with special education students, largely because it looked like fun and he didn”t want to take an art class.’It”s been really rewarding for me,’ he said about the class. As he prepares for college, Nathan still is considering becoming an attorney, but no longer sees prestige and money as his goal.

The Yin and Yang of Buying Groups.
I was researching for resources and advice, which proved to be scarier than becoming an entrepreneur, simply because there were none. Nowhere to go, no reference books to read, no college courses to take. The only people to learn from were the people who wanted to sell something to me. It seemed to me at the time the opportunity was not equitable with my goals for unbiased knowledge.
Bottom line: Where were the buying groups when I needed them? They were nowhere to be found. But, they are here now. Do your due diligence and get involved with one soon. It is a business decision you will never regret. The bottom line of your company will look better as a result of becoming a retail member of a buying group.
Robert F. Coviello is the founder and president of HTI Buying Group, an organization of independent houseware specialty store retailers and industry vendors.
